News in translation technologies

Over the last few years, Japan has been a global leader in translation technologies and innovations development by creating the so-called “instant translation glasses”.

The glasses which contain a foreign language base in their chip were presented by the Japanese mobile phones manufacturer at the electronics exhibition Ceatec 2013. This high-tech invention can project the image of the translated text over its original foreign-language version.

It is precisely this dynamic translation method which makes these glasses useful and appealing, not just in terms of translation possibilities but also manipulation of the visual image. Therefore, this innovating method is expected to be very useful for tourists in a couple of years.
In line with the above, at the Japanese company which presented this invention, NTT Docomo, they have recognized the potential significance these glasses could have for tourism, stating that thanks to the letter recognition technology, they have made it possible for tourists all over the world to read restaurant menus or hotel announcements without any problems.
Even though the glasses are still undergoing testing, for now, they are able to translate from Japanese, English and Chinese into the owner’s mother tongue. At this stage, the translation process takes about five seconds but it is believed that, in future, the process will be faster.
As an additional advantage, thanks to a special ring, it is stated that “instant translation glasses” are able to memorize a text, transfer it to a flat surface of any kind which they then use to make a screen the user can manipulate with his hand.
However, even with all abovementioned technological advantages these glasses provide, it is believed that in order to be successful on the market, they need to attract a wider range of customers. That primarily refers to the improvement of translation speed, the appearance, size and weight of the device itself, but also battery life.
According to the latest information, Google is also trying to make similar glasses, so experts for market potential are hoping that this type of competition is precisely the thing to speed up the development of translation glasses.
